Gin shop. Historical engraving of drinkers in a gin shop. A skeletal man sits drunk at lower left and a child is at the bar asking for gin. Gin was introduced to London,England,from Holland in the 18th century. It was much stronger than any alcoholic drink previously available and the removal of distilling laws by the government made it very cheap. In some quarters of the city more than a quarter of the buildings housed gin shops. The poor would drink vast quantities to escape from everyday life. This lead to a huge rise in crime,prostitution and child abuse. Taken from a book from 1843
