Heart attack or stroke. Medieval artwork of a man collapsing during a heart attack or stroke. His servants are rushing to help him but have no medical equipment other than a jug of wine. Heart attacks and strokes are caused by clogging in the arteries (arteriosclerosis) leading to the heart and brain respectively. Clogging of arteries is promoted by high-cholesterol diet. Medieval nobility, following Galen's advice, ate large quantities of meat and eggs whilst minimising their intake of fresh vegetables.
