The principal organs shown are the heart (upper centre,to right of the spinal column),liver (centre left),spleen (centre right),kidneys (darker organs below the liver and spleen) and bladder (lower centre). Major blood vessels are seen throughout the body. The trachea,or windpipe,is seen at top centre. Da Vinci studied human anatomy by observation and dissection. He produced a detailed series of annotated anatomical drawings,which are amongst the most significant scientific achievements of the Renaissance period
