Abdominal examination. A health worker examines the abdomen a young Tanzanian boy for signs of schistosomiasis. Schistosomiasis (bilharzia) is a chronic trematode worm infection widespread in Asia,Africa, the Caribbean and South America. Snails are the intermediate hosts in human schistosomiasis. Infection occurs when humans enter fresh water containing infective larvae emitted by the snails. The worms mature in the veins of the intestines and bladder, producing large numbers of eggs whose presence provokes inflammation and fibrosis that obstructs blood flow in the liver or urine flow from the ureters. Treatment is with the drug praziquantel | |
