Measuring skin water loss. Dermatologist using an evaporimeter on a patient's hand. This equipment is used to measure trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL),which is the rate of water evaporation from the skin. The evaporimeter does not measure the level of dehydration of the skin,but can measure the effectiveness of skin moisturisers in preventing water loss. Normal TEWL values are 2-5 grams per square metre per hour. They can reach values as high as 90-100 grams per square metre per hour after skin stripping (such as washing with harsh cleansing products) or if the skin has eczema
