A duck-bill or Cusco's speculum used to hold open the vagina during cervical smear tests or other gynaecological examinations. The speculum is coated with lubricating jelly (upper right) and inserted into the vagina with its "bill" closed. The bill is then opened (as seen here) to allow examination of the upper vagina and cervix (the neck of the womb). The bolt seen on the handle of the speculum is used to hold it in the open position. At lower right is a pile of Ayres spatulas used to collect specimens from the vagina or cervix | |
