The petri dish at lower left contains fluid removed from the ovarian follicles of women who have been given fertility drugs. The drugs stimulate the ovaries to produce more than one follicle at a time. The follicles each contain an egg cell,which are selected and removed under a microscope (upper left). They are then fertilised by fresh or frozen sperm. If this is successful,the resulting embryo is implanted into the woman's uterus.
