Computer Imaging Sperm Selection (CISS). Two micro- needles are inserted into a droplet of semen to capture fertile sperm by the CISS method (Computer Imaging Sperm Selection). This is a step in the process of in vitro fertilisation. The sperm are viewed through a video microscope and monitored by computer. The computer highlights fertile sperm by their head movement, swim speed & tail thrashing. These sperm are then sucked into the micro-needles and placed on the surface of a human egg for fertilisation (Sub-zonal Insemination or SUZI). In 1994 the first baby was born using this method. CISS was developed by British scientist,Dr Steve Green | |
