Computer Imaging Sperm Selection (CISS). Video light micrograph of a needle capturing a fertile sperm by the CISS method (Computer Imaging Sperm Selection). This is a step in the process of in vitro fertilisation. Sperm heads are seen as dark spherical objects. They are monitored by computer: white tracks are fertile sperm; yellow tracks show infertile sperm. Fertility is determined by sperm head movement, swim speed and tail thrashing. Once computer selected, the sperm is sucked into a micro-needle and placed on the surface of a human egg for fertilisation. CISS was developed by British scientist Dr Steve Green | |
