In vitro fertilisation (IVF) research: researcher using a needle to inject a sperm cell directly into a human egg,using a light microscope to monitor the process. The screen at left shows the ovum (centre) and needle (right) as seen through the microscope. The broad object at left is a pipette used to hold the ovum steady while the needle is inserted. By mid-1993 this new technique was still at a clinical research stage of development,but had been used successfully at some IVF centres around the world to treat infertile couples. This photograph was taken at the Jones Institute in Norfolk,Virginia,one of the world's most renowned IVF clinics
