GIFT in vitro fertilisation: surgeon using a laparoscope through a small abdominal incision to introduce both egg and sperm into the top of a woman's fallopian tube, with the aim that fertilisation & implantation of the embryo will occur. The technique, known as GIFT (gamete intra- fallopian transfer),is a variation on the standard in vitro fertilisation (IVF) technique, where fertilisation occurs in a petri dish, and embryos are transferred into the uterus via a catheter through the cervix. Here, egg and sperm are sucked up together & replaced in fallopian tube, where,in theory, fertilisation occurs in a more normal environment |
