MODEL RELEASED. Awake craniotomy surgery. Patient Mrs. Anne Daly, aged 23,undergoes awake cranio- tomy brain surgery. She has been brought to an awake state from a general anaesthetic, and is being asked if she recognises a tennis bat. The neurosurgeon works behind the plastic sheeting, having made an incision in her forehead. During surgery the patient's ability to speak and respond is assessed; brain damage from surgery is thus prevented. In this case awake craniotomy was used to remove an astrocytoma brain tumour. The procedure is mainly used in epilepsy where areas of brain need to be removed. Surgery conducted at the Atkinson Morley's Hospital,London | |
