Keyhole heart surgery. Image 2 of 2. Surgeon stitching up a patient after keyhole heart surgery. He has just finished assessing their coronary blood vessels using a miniature camera (endoscope),a procedure known as an angiography. The surgeon is using a biplane digital flatpanel system, where two images from different angles are captured and transmitted to the video monitors (seen behind the surgeon here),producing a better quality picture. If any blood vessels were found to be abnormally narrow,he may have then performed an angioplasty, where a stent (wire mesh) is inserted into the narrowed vessel to widen it and reestablish normal blood flow.
