Heart surgery. Fitting chest drains into the operation site following coronary artery bypass surgery. This woman's chest is being held open by a metal retractor. The drains remove any fluid that forms,helping to prevent infection and relieving pressure on the operation site. Lengths of vein have been taken from her legs and attached to her heart to bypass narrowed or blocked coronary arteries. The coronary arteries supply the heart muscle with oxygen and nutrients.
