MODEL RELEASED. Surgeons performing coronary bypass surgery. The bypass machine in the foreground is used to pump the patient's blood while his heart undergoes surgery. Coronary bypass surgery is used to restore a failing blood supply to the heart muscle in patients suffering from coronary heart disease. Inefficient coronary arteries, blocked by the accumulation of atheroma plaques, are replaced by venous grafts, usually taken from the saphenous vein of the leg. In addition, the internal mammary artery, which supplies the chest wall, may be re-routed to supply the heart. The improved blood flow relieves angina and reduces the risk of heart attack.
