| Paediatric heart transplant surgery. Close-up of the recently transplanted heart of a baby boy (48 days old),showing the tubes connecting it to a heart/lung machine. The temperature of the infant's blood was reduced to 15 degrees C. during the course of the operation. The donor heart was injected with a chilled electrolyte solution to maintain cardioplegia (heart stoppage),whilst all its connecting blood vessels were sutured into place. During this time the baby's circulation was maintained by the heart/lung machine (cardiopulmonary by-pass).
