Surgery to replace a damaged aortic (semilunar) heart valve with an artificial (prosthetic) valve, showing location of replacement valve. The aortic valve lies between the left ventricle (main pumping chamber) and the aorta, the largest artery in the body which distributes oxygenated blood to the general circulation. Malfunction may occur as aortic stenosis, whereby the valve fails to close fully causing an obstruction in blood flow or as aortic reguritation, where a damaged valve allows blood to reflux (flow back) into the ventricle. Symptoms of both malfunctions include breathlessness & angina pectoris. Photograph dated June 1975 | |
