Aorta surgery. Open chest cavity during surgery to repair an aneurysm (swelling) of the aortic arch. The white material (centre) is the artificial tube that is being used to replace the defective aortic arch. The aortic arch is the first part of the aorta (the main body artery) where it emerges from the top of the heart. Blood has been rerouted from this area to allow the surgery to take place. The surgical instruments include the metal chest retractors (partially seen at upper right),red suction tubes, and stitching tools for attaching the implant. The implant needs to be attached to both the heart and the remainder of the aorta. For images of the surgery, see M551/331-336 | |
