Carpal tunnel syndrome surgery. Surgeons operating on a patient's arm to relieve carpal tunnel syndrome. This syndrome results from pressure on a nerve which passes under the wrist ligament and into the hand through a gap called the carpal tunnel. Impulses from the blocked nerve cause numbness, muscle weakness, tingling and pain in the fingers. The syndrome may occur in arthritis or acromegaly,or be caused by trauma to the hands in repetitive strain injury (RSI). The surgeons are cutting the ligament in the wrist to reduce the pressure on the nerve. The surgeon at right has magnifying lenses on his glasses to improve his view of the area being operated on | |
