| Surgery in progress to replace a hip joint severely affected by rheumatoid arthritis. The surgeons are removing the bone comprising the head of the femur (the thigh bone),prior to drilling into the middle of the bone to accommodate the steel shaft of the prosthetic ball joint,which will be eventually cemented into place. The patient,a young man,had expressly asked to remain conscious during the operation so that he might observe the surgery.
