Blood sampling. Potential blood donor having a drop of blood collected from a pricked finger. The blood is being drawn up a small capillary tube. The blood will be tested for its haemoglobin levels before a donation is accepted. Haemoglobin is the red-coloured pigment in red blood cells that is involved in oxygen transport. A low concentration of haemoglobin indicates a low red blood cell count (anaemia),meaning that a blood donation could be potentially harmful to the donor. Donated blood is given to patients in transfusions to replace lost blood, for example during surgical procedures or after accidents | |
