MODEL RELEASED. Stem cell blood analysis. Technician examining a sample of cells grown from blood stem cells under a light microscope. The stem cells, which are able to develop into any type of blood cell, were harvested from placental and umbilical cord blood and then placed in a growth medium for 14 to 16 days. During that time the cells proliferated and differentiated into separate colonies of different blood cells. The microscope is used to characterise and count the cells formed. This technique is known as a colony- forming cell assay and determines the activity of stem cells in a sample | |
