In peritoneal dialysis,the filter used is the patient's own peritoneum (abdominal lining). The dialysis fluid (bags at upper right) enters the abdominal cavity via a catheter (lower centre). Waste products from the blood pass across the peritoneum to accumulate in this fluid,which is then drained and replaced.
