MODEL RELEASED. Gamma camera scan. Woman patient receives a gamma camera scan (radionuclide scan or scintigraphy) of her bones to detect metastatic bone cancer. The gamma camera (upper left) is seen over her head, while an operator sits at a monitor. On the monitor can be seen the patient's skeleton, with "hot spots" highlighted in yellow depicting cancerous bone tumours. Gamma scanning is a diagnostic technique which detects radiation emitted by a radioactive substance injected into the body. Here, the radioactive substance is absorbed by the affected bone tissues, and emits gamma rays detected by the gamma camera. The cancer tumours show up as radioactive "hot spots" | |
