Severely burnt hand of an epileptic male patient. The hand was burnt following an epileptic seizure. Epilepsy is a brain disorder where the electrical patterns of brain activity are disrupted. This can lead to loss of consciousness, and burn injuries often occur. This is a fourth-degree burn. It has destroyed the entire thickness of the skin and continues deep into the underlying tissues of fat, muscle and bone (white, first three fingers). Loss of fluid (dehydration) and wound infection are the main concerns. The patient may also go into shock,a condition where the body's automatic response to trauma impairs normal function. Tissue grafts will help to reduce scarring. Photographed in Africa | |
