MODEL RELEASED. Deformed arm after fracture. Deformity of the bones in the arm near the wrist in an 86-year-old man,one year after he suffered a Colles' fracture. A Colles' fracture is usually sustained when a person puts out a hand to break a fall. It is the most common type of fracture in middle-aged and elderly people. The end of the radius bone in the lower arm breaks, displacing the hand and wrist backwards. The ends of the broken bone are re-aligned and the wrist is supported in a cast for around 6 weeks. Minor deformity of the wrist,as seen here, may result from Colles' fracture, but movement of the joint usually returns to normal | |
