Depressed (or open) skull fractures occur when a severe blow to the head causes pieces of bone to be pushed in towards the brain. They may result in severe brain damage or death. Surgery is needed to remove any loose bone fragments and to repair damaged blood vessels. The loose pieces of bone are correctly repositioned,and the wound is held with these metal staples (sutures) until it has healed
