They fasten onto the victim's skin with lock-tight,piercing mouthparts and then expand in size as they feed on blood. Tick bites can transmit diseases,such as Lyme disease,which causes fever and inflammation of the joints. Some ticks produce a toxin that poisons nerves,leading in extreme cases to paralysis and death. Ticks should not be pulled off,as this may leave the mouthparts behind. When attached to less sensitive skin,the treatment may involve heating to remove the tick
