MODEL RELEASED. Shingles rash. First of three images. View of the face of an elderly male during the first day of an attack of shingles, also known as Herpes zoster. A red rash is seen around the patient's swollen left eye and forehead. The rash is forming yellow blisters which are teeming with viruses and will dry, flatten and crust over. The rash is extremely painful & is caused by Herpes infecting the sensory nerves serving the face. Herpes zoster is caused by the varicella- zoster virus, cause of chickenpox. Dormant virus particles can survive for years in humans until the immune system is weakened by disease or old age. See images M260/157 & M260/158 for days 3 & 5 | |
