Scabies. The red marks of a typical scabies infestation site near the groin. Scabies is the name given to a skin infection by the itch mite Sarcoptes scabiei. It is characterized by severe itching,particularly at night,red marks and often secondary infections. The itching is caused by secretions of the mite,and scratching causes scabs and sores. The female mite burrows under the skin to lay her eggs. On hatching the young migrate from person to person by contact. Other commonly affected sites are between the fingers,in armpits,on nipples and genitals; the head is seldom infected. The mites are killed by drug treatment with insecticide lotions
