Facial palsy. Close-up of the eyes of a 67 year old man showing a drooping eye (left) due to damage to the third cranial nerve (oculomotor nerve). This has occurred as a complication of insulin-dependent (type 1) diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Damage to the oculomotor nerve can lead to an inability to focus the affected eye, dilation of the pupil and double vision. Treatment is aimed at the underlying cause. In the case of IDDM,rigorous monitoring of blood sugar levels provides the best chance of recovery. IDDM is a disease in which the insulin-secreting cells in the pancreas are destroyed. Regular insulin injections allow sufferers to live a nearly normal life | |
