The affected kidney at right shows low activity (green) in the hilar area (centre of kidney),where blood vessels enter the organ. The cause of the condition in this case was narrowing of the renal artery (not seen). Kidney failure is an abnormal reduction of the rate at which the kidney removes waste products from the blood. This image was made by a gamma camera,which detects gamma rays emitted by a radioactive isotope injected into the patient.
