Stent in the abdominal aorta. Coloured 3D computed tomography (CT) scan of a stent in the abdominal aorta and iliac arteries of a 80 year old patient. The kidneys (red) are seen to either side. This frontal view is of the bottom end of the aorta, the body's main artery, where it divides into the iliac arteries (lower centre) that supply the legs. The stent is a double-woven wire mesh, which has been implanted to treat an aneurysm. An aneurysm is a weakening of the artery walls that leads to swelling and, potentially,to a rupture, which would be fatal in the aorta and iliac arteries. The stent provides support for the walls of the arteries, allowing the arteries to function normally | |
