Arterial blood clot. Light micrograph of a section through the renal (kidney) artery showing its blockage by a large blood clot (thrombus,red,centre). A mass of blood cells has blocked most of the lumen (white) of the artery. This would severely impair blood flow through the artery,leading to the tissues supplied by the artery becoming oxygen deficient. A lack of oxygen is swiftly fatal to cells,and the kidney may be severely damaged by this condition. Also,a piece of the clot could detach and travel elsewhere in the body,causing further damage. Abnormal clots usually form due to an underlying condition such as atherosclerosis or hypertension
