Coronary blood clot. Gross specimen of tissue from a heart, showing a blood clot (thrombus, dark red, centre) in one of the coronary arteries. These are the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle itself. A blood clot in one of these can block or reduce the blood supply, cutting the oxygen supply that keeps the muscle functioning. A reduced blood flow (ischaemia) will cause angina pain. A blocked blood flow will lead to tissue death (infarction),the intense pain of a heart attack and,in severe cases, death by heart failure. The blood clot (or thrombus) may have travelled to this location from elsewhere in the body, such as a site of deep vein thrombosis | |
