Heart after heart attack. Coloured gamma scans of a 74-year-old man's heart following a heart attack (myocardial infarction). The scans show the uptake of blood by the heart muscle,with red showing an adequate supply of blood. One set of scans (row A) shows the response of the heart to exercise. The other set (row B) shows the heart at rest. Blood flow is reduced to some areas of the heart (best seen on scans 8-9 and 32-33) during exercise. The blood flow returns to normal at rest,suggesting ischaemia (reduced blood flow) rather than tissue death (infarction). Radioactive tracers were used to label the blood and track its uptake by heart muscle by detecting its emissions of gamma rays
