False-colour angiogram of the human heart, showing stenosis (narrowing & obstruction) in branches of the coronary arteries. Angiography is an X-ray technique that is used to examine the heart's blood supply, particularly to locate obstructions caused by thrombus (clot) formation or the build- up of atheroma plaques. A radio-opaque dye is introduced through a catheter to outline the coronary arteries. Here, healthy arteries appear as continuous pink ribbons; in obstructed branches (top right) there is only a slight trace of dye. The resulting deficit in blood supply (ischaemia) causes the pain of angina & may lead to myocardial infarction - a heart attack | |
