MODEL RELEASED. Distorted pupil of an eye of an 82-year-old woman, resulting from a cataract operation. The pupil is the circular opening in the centre of the iris (the coloured region of the eye). Muscles in the iris contract and dilate the pupil, controlling the amount of light entering the eye. Injury to the iris can produce distortions in the shape of the pupil. A cataract is a loss of transparancy in the lens of the eye. The lens is situated behind the iris, providing the means for fine focussing of images. Cataracts are routinely treated by the surgical removal of the cloudy lens, and its replacement with an artificial lens. Distortion of the pupil does not normally occur | |
