Pterygium after surgery. Image 2 of 2. View of the eye of a 57 year old man one week after surgery to remove a corneal pterygium. A pterygium is an overgrowth of the covering of the eye. In this case,the thickened tissue was encroaching on the iris (brown) and pupil (black). The eye appears bloodshot due to trauma from the surgery. The cornea is the bulge over the iris which plays the major role in focusing light onto the retina. If the pterygium cornea threatens the patient's vision,which is rare,it should be surgically removed. This condition is most commonly seen in people from dry,hot and dusty climates.
