Oesophageal cancer. Coloured X-ray of a tumour (red) in the oesophagus or gullet (purple). This malignant tumour (neoplasm) primarily occurs at the lower end of the oesophagus. It affects more men than women, and is more common among black people than white people. Its development is not fully understood, but smoking and excessive alcohol consumption may play a part. As the cancer develops,it may block the oesophagus, causing pain when food and drink is swallowed. Early detection, followed by the removal of all or part of the oesophagus can prolong life or cure the patient | |
