Brain tumour, coloured computed tomography (CT) scan. This is a side view of an adenoma (tumour, orange) of the pituitary gland,at the base of the brain. The gland produces hormones that control many body processes. Pituitary tumours may cause hormonal problems due to loss of glandular tissue,or hormone overproduction by the tumour cells. They may also affect vision by pressing on the optic nerves. They are most common in young adulthood. Treatment is usually surgical removal, accompanied by radiation therapy or tumour- shrinking drugs. If diagnosed early, the probable outcome is fair to good. CT scans use X-rays to create images of sections through the body | |
