Mesothelioma is closely associated with exposure to asbestos,and even a very brief exposure to it can greatly increase the chances of developing the cancer. Mesothelioma forms a layer over the pleura,encasing the lungs and leading to coughing and breathing difficulties. Usually the cancer is only diagnosed after it has engulfed much of the pleural membrane. Radiotherapy may help to prolong life,but the prognosis is poor. Magnification unknown | |
