| Light micrograph of a human lymphoma,a cancerous tumour of lymph node cells or lymphocytes (dark stain dots) showing large quantities of collagen (turquoise),a fibrous protein found throughout the body. Collagen is produced by fibroblast cells whose elongated shape helps orientate the collagen into extended tracts which envelope & support soft tissues such as epithelium. In pathological conditions,as here,the dense & comparatively impenetrable nature of collagen serves to isolate small groups of tumour cells. The dense collagen pattern is indicative of a less malignant type of lymphoma. Magnification: x40 at 35mm size | |
