MODEL RELEASED. Skin cancer. Close-up of an ulcer-like squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) on the scalp of an 92-year- old male patient. This malignant tumour (neoplasm) arises from the uncontrolled proliferation of squamous cells, flattened cells in the skin and mucous membranes. The ulcer-like area seen occurs in its later stages. This form of cancer is most commonly caused by sunlight, but may also develop due to exposure to chemical carcinogens such as coal tar or in patients with immunosuppression. Treatment for small localised tumours is with surgical excision, whereas larger tumours require radiotherapy | |
