MODEL RELEASED. Internal bleeding in cancer. Blood-filled scrotum (lower centre) in a 68-year-old man with a blood disorder called myelodysplasia. This pre-cancerous bone marrow disorder can take a variety of forms, and often develops into an aggressive (acute) form of leukaemia. In myelodyplasia, the stem cells in bone marrow do not properly develop into mature blood cells. This can lead to anaemic symptoms of fatigue and also to spontaneous bleeding,as in this case. Infection is also a danger, with white blood cells (part of the immune system) not being properly produced. Treatment includes blood transfusions and transplantation of bone marrow, along with chemotherapy | |
