Lungs of asthmatic. Coloured Gamma Camera scan (scintigram) of the lungs of an asthma patient, seen in posterior view. The image followed inhala- tion of a radioactive gas,Technetium-99m. The two lungs are at upper frame with bronchi (white) between them joining the trachea (windpipe) at top. The gas penetrates into the airways, but not as far as the air sacs (alveoli). Both lungs show asthmatic obstruction of airways, the yellow areas broken up,with the lung at left more affected and constricted. The stomach is seen at lower left. Gamma scanning uses a radioactive tracer, here a gas, which is detected by a gamma camera | |
