Alzheimer's disease affected brain. View of a slice through a brain affected by Alzheimer's disease. The front of the brain is at left. Alzheimer's disease is a progressive brain wasting condition which leads to brain shrinkage and the deepening and widening of the furrows on the surface of the brain. The ventricle (lower centre) is noticeably enlarged due to loss of brain tissue. These losses result in dementia, shown by memory loss, personality changes, psychosis and eventually death. It is most common after the age of 65,and there is no cure. For a comparison with a healthy brain slice see image P330/269 | |
