Megaloblastic anaemia. Light micrograph of bone marrow in megaloblastic anaemia. Megaloblasts (round, dark blue) are abnormal precursors of red blood cells. They characteristically appear in the bone marrow in megaloblastic anaemia. Megaloblasts give rise to deformed red blood cells known as macrocytes. These cells have a reduced capacity for carrying oxygen around the body. This can cause symptoms of tiredness, headache and weight loss. Megaloblastic anaemia is caused by deficiency of certain B vitamins and is usually treated by vitamin supplements. The other cells (irregular, pale blue or purple) are normal white blood cells.
