Pernicious anaemia. Light micrograph of a blood smear in a patient suffering from pernicious (megaloblastic) anaemia. This anaemia is caused by deficiency of vitamin B12 or folic acid due to the intestine being unable to absorb these substances. Compared to a normal blood smear, the number of red blood cells (spherical structures) is severely reduced. Many of these depleted red blood cells are also enlarged or deformed. Two white blood cells can be seen with darkly staining nuclei. A reduced number of red blood cells reduces the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. Symptoms of pernicious anaemia include tiredness & lowered immunity. Magnification: x630 at 35mm size | |
