Influenzavirus C. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the influenza C virus, which is the cause of influenza (flu) in humans and pigs. It is rare compared to types A and B,but can be severe and can cause local epidemics. The virus particles have an outer coat bearing the proteins haemagglutinin (H) and neuraminidase (N),which allow the virus to enter and leave host cells respectively. As with all viruses, influenza cannot reproduce by itself, instead entering cells and hijacking their biochemical machinery to produce more copies of the virus. Contracting the flu usually causes lethargy, aching muscles, fever and nausea. Magnification: x92,000 when printed 10 centimetres wide | |
